What is an RV SmartPlug and why use one instead of a standard power cord end?

The SmartPlug is a redesigned 30-amp or 50-amp shore power connector that replaces the twist-lock or straight-blade end on a standard RV cord. It uses a wider contact surface, a positive locking mechanism, and a weather-sealed housing to reduce the heat buildup and arcing that cause melted plugs at the pedestal. If you have ever pulled a scorched twist-lock out of a campground outlet, that is the failure mode this system is built to prevent.

Will a SmartPlug cord work at a standard campground pedestal?

Yes. The pedestal end of the cord stays standard 30A (TT-30P) or 50A (NEMA 14-50P), so it plugs into any normal RV park outlet. The SmartPlug connection only replaces the cord-to-RV inlet, which means you need both the matching SmartPlug inlet installed on your rig and the SmartPlug-equipped cord.
