Most RVs come factory fitted with an LP gas detector, and for good reason. Propane is heavier than air and can accumulate at floor level without any obvious signs before a detector picks it up. A functioning LP detector gives you early warning when gas levels rise to a concerning level inside your RV.

LP detectors have a limited service life, typically around five to seven years, after which they should be replaced regardless of whether they appear to be working. Checking the manufacture date on your existing detector is a simple but important step in routine RV safety maintenance.

What is the difference between an RV LP detector and an RV carbon monoxide detector?

An LP (propane) gas detector senses raw propane leaks from your stove, furnace, water heater, or refrigerator gas lines, and it mounts low to the floor because propane is heavier than air. A carbon monoxide detector senses CO produced by incomplete combustion from those same appliances or a nearby generator, and it mounts at breathing height because CO mixes with cabin air. Many RVs use a combination LP/CO alarm to cover both threats from a single unit. How do I know which RV propane detector will fit my coach?

Fit is driven by three things: the cutout dimensions in your wall, the operating voltage (most RV LP detectors run on 12V DC), and the connector style (bare wire leads or a plug). Pull your existing alarm, check the model number on the back label, and match it to the replacements in this collection. How long do RV LP gas detectors last and when should they be replaced?

Most RV LP and CO detectors have a sensor life of 5 to 7 years from the date of manufacture, not the date of installation. Check the printed expiration date on the face or back of your alarm. Once a unit reaches end-of-life it will typically chirp or display an error code regardless of whether propane is present, and the sensor cannot be recalibrated. Replace it with a new alarm rated for RV use, 12V DC powered, and listed to UL 1484 (LP) or UL 2034 (CO) standards.

Where should an LP detector be mounted in an RV?

Propane is heavier than air, so the LP sensor must be installed within 4 to 18 inches of the floor, near the propane appliances (galley, furnace, or water heater bay wall) but not directly behind a slide-out, inside a cabinet, or in a high-traffic foot-kick zone. Keep it away from vents, fans, and the entry door where drafts can delay detection. Combination LP/CO units follow the LP mounting rule because the LP sensor is the limiting factor.
