Knowing how much propane you have left is one of those small things that makes a real difference on a trip. Running out of LP gas mid-cook or waking up to a cold RV because the furnace ran out overnight are situations that are easy to avoid with the right monitoring in place.

What size propane cylinder does my RV use?

Most travel trailers and fifth wheels carry two DOT propane cylinders on the tongue or in a front compartment. The common sizes are 20 lb (about 4.7 gallons) and 30 lb (about 7 gallons). Most motorhomes use a permanently mounted ASME tank instead, so a portable LP gas cylinder will not replace a chassis-mounted tank. Before ordering, measure your cylinder tray or hold-down bracket. Do RV propane cylinders need an OPD valve, and when do they expire?

Yes. DOT propane cylinders from 4 lb to 40 lb must have an overfill protection device (OPD) valve before a filling station can refill them. You can identify an OPD valve by its triangular handwheel. A DOT cylinder must be requalified 12 years after the manufacture date stamped on the collar, and then at set intervals after that. Check the collar date on your existing cylinders before deciding whether to replace one or both.

How can I tell how much propane is left in my RV cylinder?

A propane tank level indicator mounts on the cylinder or in the regulator line and shows the remaining level, so you avoid running out halfway through a trip. Your LP supply runs the furnace, the absorption refrigerator on gas mode, and the water heater. Burn rate depends on which of these appliances are running. Gas water heaters such as our 10 gallon RV water heaters and Dometic 6 gallon RV water heaters draw from the same cylinders. A level indicator is the most reliable way to know when to refill.
