What does a 6 gallon RV water heater fit?

A 6 gallon tank is the standard size in most travel trailers and smaller fifth wheels, giving you enough hot water for back-to-back showers or dishes without the weight and recovery time of a larger unit. Suburban and Atwood/Dometic both build 6 gallon models in DSI (Direct Spark Ignition), pilot, and electric/gas combo configurations. Confirm your existing cutout (roughly 12-3/4" x 16-3/4" for most 6 gallon units) and door style before ordering. If you need more capacity, see our 10 gallon RV water heater collection.

How do I decode Suburban 6 gallon water heater model numbers?

Suburban uses a consistent key: SW = Suburban Water heater, the number = gallon capacity, D = DSI (Direct Spark Ignition), E = Electric element, and P = Pilot ignition. So an SW6DE is a 6 gallon Suburban with DSI ignition and a 120V electric element for hookup use; an SW6D is the gas-only DSI version. Match the suffix to your current unit's wiring and gas setup to avoid rework at install.

Can I replace a gas-only 6 gallon water heater with a gas/electric model?

Yes, as long as the physical dimensions match and you can run 120V to the heater bay. Gas/electric models (the DE and DEL suffixes) let you run on shore power at the campground and save propane, then switch to LP when boondocking. You will need to add a switch and a dedicated 15A circuit if one is not already in place. For other off-grid upgrades, browse our RV electronics collection.

What maintenance does a 6 gallon RV water heater need?

Drain and flush the tank at the start and end of every season to clear sediment, and check the anode rod annually if you run a Suburban (Atwood/Dometic aluminum tanks do not use one). Replace the anode rod when it is reduced to about 25% of its original diameter to protect the tank from corrosion. Before winter storage, drain the tank and run RV antifreeze through the lines, our RV winterizing kits have the fittings and antifreeze pumps to do the job in under an hour.
