What is the Coleman Roughneck RV air conditioner series?

The Roughneck is Coleman-Mach's heavy-duty rooftop RV air conditioner line, built for fleet, rental, and work-site rigs that need a tougher housing and simpler serviceability than the standard Mach series. The shroud is reinforced to handle harder use, and the unit ships in 13,500 BTU and 15,000 BTU configurations for both ducted and non-ducted setups. Confirm your existing roof opening (standard 14" x 14") and ceiling assembly type before ordering.

Do I need a ceiling assembly with a Coleman Roughneck AC?

Yes. The Roughneck rooftop unit is the upper half of the system; you also need a matching ceiling assembly to control the unit and direct airflow into the cabin. For ducted installations, see our Coleman ceiling assembly for ducted installations. For heat pump ducted setups, use the Coleman Power Saver HP ceiling assembly. Match the assembly to your thermostat type (wall vs. ceiling) and whether your RV has ductwork in the roof.

What size Roughneck AC do I need, 13,500 or 15,000 BTU?

For trailers and motorhomes up to about 30 feet with reasonable insulation, the 13,500 BTU Roughneck handles most climates. For longer rigs, hot-climate use (Texas, Arizona, Florida summers), or replacing an existing 15K unit, step up to the 15,000 BTU version. Amp draw on the 15K is higher, so verify your 30-amp or 50-amp shore power setup and breaker capacity before installing.

Will a Roughneck unit replace my existing Coleman-Mach rooftop AC?

In most cases, yes. Roughneck units use the standard 14" x 14" roof cutout shared across the Coleman-Mach lineup, so they drop into the same opening as a Mach 3, Mach 8, or Mach 15. The ceiling assembly and thermostat wiring need to be compatible with the new unit's control board, so confirm part numbers on both halves before ordering. If you need help cross-referencing your old model, text or call our team at 817-984-1852.

Does the Roughneck ship freight, and what is the cost?

Rooftop AC units ship via truck freight due to size and weight, typically with a $99 freight charge to a residential or commercial address. Inspect the shroud and base pan for shipping damage before signing the delivery receipt. Smaller related parts, like capacitors, gaskets, and control boards, ship standard ground; browse related RV electronics and controls for replacement components.

What refrigerant does the Coleman Roughneck use?

Current production Roughneck units use R-410A refrigerant. The system is sealed at the factory and is not user-serviceable; if you have a refrigerant or compressor issue, the rooftop unit is replaced as a whole rather than recharged in the field. Routine maintenance is limited to cleaning the condenser and evaporator coils, checking the roof gasket annually, and replacing the return air filter in the ceiling assembly.
