What smoke detectors work in an RV?
RV smoke alarms are purpose-built for the vibration, temperature swings, and 12V DC wiring found in motorhomes and travel trailers. Standard residential units are not rated for RV use and can produce false alarms or fail to trigger when it matters. Look for a unit listed for recreational vehicle or mobile home installation, with a sealed lithium battery or hardwired 9V backup. Pair your smoke alarm with an RV electronics upgrade to keep your safety systems on a reliable power source.
How often should I replace my RV smoke alarm?
Replace the entire RV smoke detector every 7 to 10 years from the date of manufacture printed on the back of the unit, regardless of whether it still chirps when tested. The sensing chamber degrades over time and loses sensitivity to smoke particles. Batteries should be changed annually, and the alarm should be tested every time you take the rig out. If the unit predates your ownership, replace it now and write the install date on the housing.
Where should the smoke alarm be mounted in a camper?
Mount the smoke detector on the ceiling, at least 4 inches from any wall, and keep it away from the cooktop, range hood, and bathroom door to reduce nuisance alarms from cooking steam and shower humidity. In most floorplans, the main living area near the hallway to the bedroom is the correct location. If you have a bunkhouse or a second sleeping zone, add a second alarm there. Check our Ventline vent accessories if you need to improve airflow around the cooking area.
Do I need both a smoke detector and an LP gas detector in my RV?
Yes. A smoke alarm senses combustion particles from a fire, while an LP gas detector senses propane leaks at floor level, since propane is heavier than air. The two devices protect against different hazards and are not interchangeable. Most RVs from the factory include one of each, plus a carbon monoxide alarm. If any of yours are missing, expired, or showing fault codes, replace them before your next trip.
