What size RV water heater do I need?

Tank capacity is the first decision. A 6-gallon unit handles weekend trips and solo or two-person use. A 10-gallon unit is the right call for families, full-timers, or anyone who wants back-to-back showers without waiting on recovery time. Measure the existing door opening before ordering, since the cutout dimensions vary between 6 and 10 gallon models. If you are upsizing, see our 10 gallon RV water heater selection for direct-replacement options.

What is the difference between a gas, electric, and gas/electric RV water heater?

Gas (LP) models run off your propane supply and work anywhere. Electric models run on 110 volt shore power and are useful at full-hookup campgrounds where you want to conserve propane. Gas/electric combination units give you both, with a switch to choose the heat source or run them together for faster recovery. DSI (Direct Spark Ignition) models light the burner automatically, while older pilot-light models require manual lighting.

Can I replace my RV water heater with a different brand?

In most cases, yes, as long as the door cutout and tank dimensions match. Suburban and Atwood (now Dometic) use different door sizes and mounting flanges, so a like-for-like replacement is the cleanest swap. If you are changing brands, you will likely need a new door and may need to modify the opening. Confirm your existing model number, gallon capacity, and door dimensions before ordering. For maintenance parts on your current unit, our Thetford chemical and tank care lines pair well with a full system refresh.

How often should I replace the anode rod in my RV water heater?

Suburban tanks use a sacrificial anode rod that protects the steel tank from corrosion. Inspect it once a season and replace it when it is worn down to roughly a quarter of its original diameter, typically every 12 to 18 months depending on water quality. Atwood and Dometic aluminum tanks do not use an anode rod, they use a plastic drain plug instead. Flushing the tank annually extends the life of either system.

Why is my RV water heater not heating on gas or electric?

Common failure points are the thermostat, high-limit switch, thermal cutoff, gas valve, heating element (on electric models), and the control board. On DSI units, a no-light condition is often the circuit board or a dirty ground at the burner assembly. On electric, a tripped reset button or a failed element are the usual causes. Test components with a multimeter before replacing, and always shut off propane and disconnect 110 volt power before servicing.

Do RV water heaters ship free?

Yes, orders over $100 ship free within the contiguous US. Larger units may ship via standard ground or LTL freight depending on size and destination, and shipping method is noted on each product page.
