What does an RV brake controller do?

A brake controller is the device mounted in your tow vehicle that activates the electric brakes on your trailer when you apply the tow vehicle's brake pedal. It sends a proportional or time-delayed signal through the 7-way connector to the trailer's brake magnets, syncing trailer braking with vehicle braking. Without one, electric trailer brakes will not engage, which is both unsafe and illegal in most states for trailers over 3,000 lbs GVWR.

Proportional vs. time-delayed brake controller: which should I buy?

Proportional (inertia-based) controllers use an accelerometer to match trailer braking force to how hard you are stopping the tow vehicle, which produces smoother stops and less brake wear, the better choice for fifth wheels and heavier travel trailers. Time-delayed controllers apply a preset braking force after a fixed delay, which is simpler and less expensive but harder on trailer brakes. For most RV towing applications, a proportional unit is worth the upgrade. Pair it with the right RV plug adapters if your tow vehicle and trailer connectors do not match.

What wiring do I need to install a brake controller?

A standard install requires four wires: 12V power from the tow vehicle battery (fused), ground, the brake signal wire from the tow vehicle's brake light switch, and the output wire to the trailer connector's blue brake wire. Many late-model trucks and SUVs include a factory tow package with a pre-wired plug-and-play harness that eliminates splicing. Confirm your tow vehicle's year, make, and model before ordering to match the correct harness or pigtail. Our team is here to help, text or call 817-984-1852.

Will a brake controller work with surge or hydraulic brakes?

No. Brake controllers in this collection are built for electric and electric-over-hydraulic trailer brake systems. Surge (hydraulic) brakes actuate mechanically from trailer momentum and do not use a controller. If your trailer has electric-over-hydraulic actuators, confirm the controller is rated for that system and check the amperage draw against the controller's output rating before ordering.

How do I know if my brake controller or wiring has failed?

Common signs include a "no trailer connected" error on the controller display, trailer brakes that do not engage when the manual override is pressed, weak or grabbing braking, or blown brake fuses. Start by checking the 7-way connector for corrosion, then test continuity on the blue brake wire and verify 12V power at the controller harness. If the controller powers on but shows no trailer signal, the issue is usually downstream in the trailer wiring or magnets rather than the controller itself.

Do you offer free shipping on brake controls and wiring?

Yes. Brake controllers, wiring harnesses, adapters, and related accessories ship free on orders over $100 within the continental US. Most in-stock items ship within 1-2 business days.
