Electrical problems at the campsite can damage your RV's appliances, air conditioner, and onboard electronics in seconds. Power pedestals vary widely in quality, and issues like voltage spikes, low voltage, and wiring faults are more common than you might think. A surge protector is one of the simplest ways to protect a significant investment.

Our selection of RV surge protectors includes both portable and hardwired options, available in 30-amp and 50-amp configurations to match your RV's electrical system. Many units also offer diagnostic displays so you can monitor incoming power before it reaches your rig. Check your RV's amp service before ordering to make sure you select the correct protector for your setup.

What does an RV surge protector actually do?

An RV surge protector sits between the pedestal and your rig to block voltage spikes, miswired pedestals, open grounds, reverse polarity, and low/high voltage events that can fry your converter, air conditioner, and refrigerator boards. Basic surge-only units clamp spikes. Full EMS (Electrical Management System) units, like the Progressive EMS-PT30X and PT50X, also cut power when they detect a fault condition and reconnect once the pedestal stabilizes. Pair it with the right RV plug adapters if you're hooking up to a non-matching pedestal amperage.

Do I need a 30 amp or 50 amp surge protector?

Match the protector to your RV's shore power cord, not the pedestal. A 30 amp RV uses a TT-30 plug (120V, single leg) and needs a 30 amp surge protector. A 50 amp RV uses a 14-50 plug (120/240V, two legs) and needs a 50 amp unit, which monitors both legs independently. Running a 50 amp rig through a 30 amp protector with an adapter leaves half your circuits unmonitored, so size the surge protector to the coach.

What's the difference between a surge protector and an EMS?

A standard surge protector only handles transient voltage spikes, rated in joules. An EMS does that plus continuous monitoring for low voltage (typically under 104V), high voltage (over 132V), open ground, open neutral, reverse polarity, and AC frequency errors, then disconnects power before the fault reaches your appliances. For full-time campers and anyone plugging into older park pedestals, the EMS-level protection is the one worth buying. It also shields the rest of your RV electronics from slow brownouts that surge-only units ignore.

Portable or hardwired: which type should I buy?

Portable units plug into the pedestal and your shore cord plugs into them. They're simple, movable between rigs, and easy to inspect, but they sit exposed at the pedestal and can be a target for theft if left unlocked. Hardwired units install inside the RV between the shore cord inlet and the distribution panel, which protects them from weather and walk-off but requires a one-time wiring job. Both protect equally well at the same amp rating; the decision comes down to install effort versus pedestal-side convenience.

How many joules of surge protection do I need?

For RV use, look for a minimum of 1,750 joules on a 30 amp unit and 3,000+ joules on a 50 amp unit. Higher joule ratings absorb larger or more frequent spikes before the protector's MOVs degrade. Most quality RV-rated units in this collection meet or exceed those thresholds and include indicator lights or displays that show remaining protection status, so you know when the unit has taken hits and needs replacement.
