What does a Progressive Industries surge protector actually protect against?

Progressive Industries EMS units guard against low voltage, high voltage, open neutral, open ground, reverse polarity, and AC frequency faults at the pedestal. Standard surge-only models block voltage spikes from lightning or grid switching, while the full EMS line (like the EMS-PT30X and EMS-PT50X) shuts off power to your RV when any unsafe condition is detected and reconnects automatically once the fault clears. If you need adapters to match a pedestal that does not fit your shore cord, see our RV plug adapters collection.

Do I need a 30 amp or 50 amp Progressive Industries unit?

Match the unit to your RV's shore power cord. A 30 amp RV with a TT-30 plug uses the PT30X or SSP-30XL. A 50 amp RV with a 14-50 plug uses the PT50X or SSP-50XL. Check the amperage stamped on your shore cord end before ordering. Running the wrong amperage will either trip immediately or fail to protect the circuit correctly.

What is the difference between a portable EMS and a hardwired model?

Portable units plug in between the pedestal and your shore cord, so they move with you and can be locked to the pedestal. Hardwired models install inside the RV's power compartment and cannot be stolen or forgotten at a campsite. Hardwired units also let you read fault codes from an interior display. Both versions deliver the same surge and EMS protection; the choice comes down to install effort and theft concern.

Does Progressive Industries cover the warranty on these units?

Yes. Progressive Industries backs the EMS-PT and EMS-HW series with a lifetime warranty when registered, and the SSP surge-only line carries a 3-year warranty. Keep your order confirmation and register the unit with Progressive Industries after install. For other RV electrical protection components, the Coleman RV air conditioner soft start collection pairs well with an EMS to reduce compressor inrush current at startup.

Will a Progressive Industries EMS work with a generator or solar inverter?

EMS units work with clean sine-wave generators and inverters that produce stable 60 Hz output and proper neutral-ground bonding. Some inverter generators float the neutral, which the EMS reads as an open ground fault. In that case a neutral-ground bonding plug on the unused generator outlet resolves the error. Modified sine-wave inverters are not recommended with EMS units.
