What is the difference between a Hughes Autoformer and a Hughes Power Watchdog?

The Hughes Autoformer is a voltage booster that raises low pedestal voltage by approximately 10% when shore power drops below safe operating levels, protecting your air conditioner and other 120V appliances from brownout damage. The Hughes Power Watchdog is a surge protector and EMS that monitors for voltage spikes, miswired pedestals, open neutral or ground faults, and high/low voltage conditions, then disconnects power before damage reaches your rig. Many full-timers run both in series. Pair either device with compatible RV plug adapters if you need to step between 30A and 50A pedestals.

Do I need a 30 amp or 50 amp Hughes surge protector for my RV?

Match the device to your RV's shore power cord and inlet. If your rig has a single 30A TT-30 inlet, the Hughes Autoformer RV2130 or Power Watchdog PWD30 is correct. If your rig has a 50A NEMA 14-50 inlet (most fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes), choose the RV2200 Autoformer or PWD50EPO/PWD50EPOW Power Watchdog. Check the cord end and the amperage rating on your transfer switch before ordering.

Will a Hughes Autoformer void my RV warranty or damage the campground pedestal?

Hughes Autoformers are UL-listed and draw no additional current from the pedestal; they regulate voltage by adjusting the transformer windings, not by pulling extra amps. They will not trip a properly functioning 30A or 50A breaker under normal load. Confirm your specific RV manufacturer's warranty language, and review the rest of your RV electronics for compatibility before installation.

Does the Hughes Power Watchdog connect to my phone?

Yes. The PWD30, PWD50, and PWD50EPOW models include built-in Bluetooth and pair with the free Power Watchdog app on iOS and Android. The app reports real-time voltage on both legs (for 50A units), amperage draw, frequency, and fault history. The EPO (Emergency Power Off) variants add a remote shutoff feature so you can kill shore power from inside the rig without unplugging at the pedestal.

What shipping options are available on Hughes surge protectors?

Hughes Autoformers and Power Watchdog units ship via standard ground carrier from our warehouse, typically within 1-2 business days of order confirmation. Orders over $100 ship free. If you need help confirming which Hughes model fits your rig, text or call our team at 817-984-1852 before ordering.
