Suburban RV Water Heater Anode Rods

Which Suburban RV water heaters need an anode rod?
All Suburban RV water heaters with a steel tank require an anode rod, including the SW6D, SW6DE, SW6DEL, SW10DE, SW10DEL, SAW6D, and SAW10. The anode rod protects the steel tank from corrosion by sacrificing itself to galvanic action. Atwood water heaters use aluminum tanks and do not need an anode rod. Confirm your model number on the data plate before ordering. If you have a Suburban 10-gallon unit, see our 10 gallon RV water heater parts collection for matching components.
How often should I replace the anode rod in my Suburban water heater?
Inspect the anode rod at least once per camping season, or every 6 to 12 months depending on water quality. Replace it when more than 75% of the rod has been consumed or when the steel core wire is exposed. Hard water and water with high mineral content will consume the rod faster. Many RV owners replace the anode rod as part of annual winterization. Pair the swap with our RV winterizing kits to drain and flush the tank at the same time.
What anode rod fits the Suburban SW6D?
The Suburban SW6D uses a 9.25-inch magnesium or aluminum anode rod with a 3/4-inch NPT thread. Magnesium rods offer stronger corrosion protection in most water conditions, while aluminum-zinc rods last longer in areas with high sulfur content (which can cause a rotten-egg smell). The same rod fits the SW6DE, SW6DEL, SAW6D, and other 6-gallon Suburban models. Always confirm your model number before ordering.
Do I need any other parts when replacing the anode rod?
At minimum, you will need fresh Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant to seal the new rod against the tank threads. A 1-1/16 inch socket and breaker bar are required to remove the old rod. Many owners also flush the tank with a tank rinser wand during the swap to clear sediment that accelerates corrosion. If your drain plug threads are damaged or leaking, replace the plug at the same time.
Magnesium or aluminum anode rod, which should I buy?
Magnesium anode rods provide the strongest sacrificial protection and work well with most municipal and well water sources. Aluminum-zinc rods last longer and are the better choice if you camp in areas with high-sulfur water, since magnesium can react with sulfur to produce a hydrogen sulfide odor in the hot water. If you frequently smell rotten eggs from the hot water tap, switch to an aluminum-zinc rod and flush the tank thoroughly.
Does the anode rod ship free?
Yes. Anode rods ship free on orders over $100, and most orders leave the warehouse within one business day. Need help confirming the right rod for your Suburban model? Our team at United RV Parts is here to help, text or call 817-984-1852.
