What does the Suburban SAW model number mean?

The SAW prefix breaks down as S=Suburban, A=Atwood-style replacement chassis, W=Water Heater. The number after indicates tank capacity in gallons (6D = 6 gallon, direct spark ignition), and a trailing E means the unit also has an electric heating element in addition to LP gas. So a SAW6DE is a 6-gallon Suburban water heater with both DSI gas operation and 120V electric heat. Confirm your existing model number and door cutout dimensions before ordering.

Will a Suburban SAW6D or SAW6DE fit in my existing Atwood water heater opening?

Yes. The SAW series is designed as a direct replacement for Atwood 6-gallon water heaters, using the same 12 3/4" x 12 3/4" cutout and similar mounting flange. No reframing is required for most installations. Plumbing and gas line connections may need minor adjustment depending on your original unit. If you need a larger capacity, see our 10 gallon RV water heater collection.

What is the difference between the SAW6D and SAW6DE?

Both are 6-gallon tanks with DSI (Direct Spark Ignition) for LP gas operation. The SAW6DE adds a 120V AC electric heating element, letting you heat water on shore power without burning propane. The SAW6D runs on LP gas only. If you spend time at full-hookup parks, the SAW6DE typically pays for itself in propane savings.

Is the "Suburban wood heater" the same as a Suburban water heater?

No. Suburban does not make a wood-burning RV heater; the SAW line is strictly LP gas and electric water heaters for RVs. If you searched for "Suburban wood heater" you likely meant the SAW water heater series. For winter storage prep on any Suburban tank, pair the unit with our RV winterizing kits to protect the tank and lines from freeze damage.

What maintenance does a Suburban SAW water heater need?

Flush the tank annually to remove sediment, inspect the anode rod (Suburban tanks use an anode rod, unlike Atwood aluminum tanks) and replace it when more than 75% consumed, and test the T&P relief valve each season. Check the burner tube for spider webs or debris before each trip, this is the most common cause of no-light DSI faults. Replacement anode rods, drain valves, and gas valves are available as service parts.
