How do I know which heating element fits my RV water heater?

Confirm your water heater's brand, model number, and voltage before ordering. Suburban and Atwood (now Dometic) elements are the most common, and they are not interchangeable. Suburban elements typically use a 1-inch NPT thread, while Atwood elements use a smaller thread pattern. Most elements in this collection are 120V at either 1,440 watts or 1,500 watts. Check the label on your tank or the original element for the wattage and voltage stamp. If you have a 10-gallon tank, you can also browse our 10 Gallon RV Water Heater collection for the full unit and matching parts.

What are the signs that my RV water heater element needs to be replaced?

The most common signs are no hot water on electric mode (while LP still works), a tripped ECO/thermal cutoff that keeps resetting, or a visibly corroded element when pulled. A multimeter reading with no continuity across the element terminals confirms a burned-out heating element. Sediment buildup shortens element life, so flushing the tank and inspecting the anode rod at the same time is good practice.

Can I replace an RV water heater heating element myself?

Yes. Replacing a heating element is one of the more straightforward repairs on an RV water heater. Shut off power at the breaker and the water heater switch, drain the tank, remove the element with a 1-1/2 inch socket (Suburban) or the correct Atwood tool, install the new element with fresh PTFE tape on the threads, refill the tank fully before restoring power, and check for leaks. Dry-firing an element, powering it before the tank is full, will burn it out in seconds.

Do you ship RV heating elements and what does shipping cost?

Yes, heating elements ship via standard ground from our Texas warehouse, typically within 1-2 business days. Orders over $100 ship free. If you also need winter prep parts or 120V accessories, check our RV Winterizing Kits and RV Electronics collections to consolidate the order. Questions on fitment?
