What is an RV waste valve and how does it work?

An RV waste valve, sometimes called a dump valve or gate valve, is the blade-style shutoff that holds black or gray water in your holding tank until you connect a sewer hose and pull the handle. The blade slides horizontally across the drain outlet, sealing against rubber gaskets on both sides. Most RV waste valves are sized 1.5" or 3" to match standard tank fittings and sewer hose adapters. When the seals wear or the blade corrodes, you get slow leaks at the cap, which is the usual reason for replacement.

How do I know which RV sewer valve size to order?

Check the diameter of the valve body where it bolts to your tank flange. The two standard sizes are 3" (used on most black tank outlets and main termination valves) and 1.5" (used on gray tank drains and smaller auxiliary lines). Measure the bolt pattern across the flange before ordering. If you are also replacing seals or fittings during the job, our RV winterizing kits include compatible plumbing components useful for flushing and pressure-testing the new valve.

Can I replace an RV dump valve myself?

Yes. A blade valve swap is a bolt-on job: empty and rinse the tank, remove the four bolts holding the valve body between the flanges, slide the old valve out, replace both rubber seals, and torque the new valve into place. No glue or solvent welding is required on bolt-flange valves. Budget 30 to 45 minutes per valve and have a drain pan ready for residual water in the line.

What other black tank parts should I check while replacing the valve?

While the underbelly is open, inspect the tank flange seals, the termination cap and its O-ring, any ABS pipe fittings for cracks, and the cable or handle assembly if your valve is remote-mounted. It is also a good time to look at vent lines and roof vents. Pair the new valve with quality tank chemicals to keep the new seals from drying out, and see our RV electronics collection if you are upgrading to a tank monitor at the same time.

Do these RV waste valves fit Thetford, Valterra, and Bristol brands?

Most 3" and 1.5" bolt-flange valves follow the same industry-standard bolt pattern, so Valterra, Thetford, and Bristol-style bodies are typically cross-compatible at the flange. Cable-operated and electric valves are brand-specific, so confirm the handle or actuator part number against your existing unit. Call or text 817-984-1852 with your current valve markings if you want fitment confirmed before ordering.
