Empower Your RV Adventures: A Guide to Choosing the Perfect RV Power Cord and Adapters

Embarking on RV journeys entails thoughtful consideration of every aspect, including the often overlooked yet crucial component: the power cord and adapters.

What RV plug adapter do I need for a 30 amp to 50 amp connection?

If your RV has a 50 amp cord and you are plugging into a 30 amp pedestal, you need a 30M/50F dogbone adapter (30 amp male to 50 amp female). If the situation is reversed, with a 30 amp RV cord going into a 50 amp pedestal, you need a 50M/30F adapter. Check the amperage stamped on your shore power cord before ordering, and look for adapters with weather-resistant housings and pull handles to make disconnection easier. For more electrical upgrades and accessories, browse our RV electronics collection.

What is the difference between an RV adapter plug and an RV converter plug?

An RV adapter plug changes the shape of the connection between your shore power cord and the pedestal, for example stepping a 50 amp cord down to a 30 amp outlet, or 30 amp down to a standard 15/20 amp household plug. It does not change the amperage available, only the physical fit. An RV power converter, by contrast, is an onboard component that converts 120V AC shore power into 12V DC to run your interior lights, water pump, and accessories. If your converter is the part you are after, those are listed separately from the adapter cords on this page.

Can I leave an RV adapter cord plugged in during a storm or wet weather?

RV adapter cords sold here are rated for outdoor use, but the connection point is still the most vulnerable spot in your shore power setup. Use a weatherproof cord cover or surge guard housing over the adapter junction, keep the connection off the ground, and inspect the prongs for pitting or discoloration before each trip. Pitted prongs indicate heat damage and the adapter should be replaced. For seasonal storage, pair adapter inspection with a full RV winterizing kit to protect the rest of your water and electrical systems.

Will a 30 amp to 15 amp adapter run my RV air conditioner?

A 15 amp household outlet supplies roughly 1,800 watts, which is not enough to run a 13,500 or 15,000 BTU rooftop air conditioner along with other loads. You can use a 30M/15F adapter to keep your refrigerator, lights, and battery charger running at home or in a driveway, but plan to leave the AC off or limit it to short cycles with no other appliances drawing power. If you run a Coleman rooftop unit, a Coleman soft start kit reduces compressor inrush current and can make lower-amp connections more workable.

Are the adapters in this collection compatible with all RV brands?

Yes. RV shore power connections follow standardized NEMA configurations (TT-30 for 30 amp service, 14-50 for 50 amp service, 5-15 and 5-20 for household outlets), so the adapters in this collection fit any RV using those standard plugs, including Keystone, Forest River, Jayco, Thor, Winnebago, Grand Design, and Airstream rigs. Confirm the amp rating on your existing shore power cord and the pedestal you plan to connect to before ordering. Questions on a specific setup? Text or call our team at 817-984-1852.
