When do I need a Dometic to Atwood water heater conversion kit?

You need this conversion kit only when replacing an Atwood 6 gallon water heater with a Dometic 6 gallon unit. The Dometic and Atwood door cutouts and mounting flanges are not interchangeable, so the kit adapts the existing Atwood opening in your sidewall to accept the Dometic door frame without cutting new sheet metal. If you are replacing a Dometic with a Dometic, or an Atwood with an Atwood, no conversion kit is required.

Will a Suburban water heater door conversion kit work for an Atwood to Dometic swap?

No. A Suburban door conversion kit is built for the Suburban flange pattern and tank dimensions, which differ from both Atwood and Dometic. For an Atwood 6 gallon to Dometic 6 gallon swap, use a conversion kit specifically labeled for Atwood-to-Dometic. Confirm your old unit's model number on the data plate inside the door before ordering.

Does this kit fit 10 gallon water heaters?

No. This collection covers 6 gallon to 6 gallon conversions only. If you are stepping up to a larger tank, see our 10 gallon RV water heater collection for compatible units and trim options. Tank capacity changes the cutout dimensions, so a 6 gallon conversion kit will not adapt a 10 gallon opening.

What else should I pick up during the water heater swap?

Plan on a new anode rod if your replacement Dometic uses one, fresh Teflon tape or pipe sealant for the inlet and outlet fittings, and butyl tape for the door frame to sidewall seal. If the conversion is part of seasonal prep, our RV winterizing kits cover the antifreeze, bypass fittings, and blowout plugs needed to protect the new tank through cold storage.
